Assessing Sedimentary Boundary Layer Calcium Carbonate Precipitation and Dissolution Using the Calcium Isotopic Composition of Pore Fluids

چکیده

We present pore fluid geochemistry, including major ion and trace metal concentrations the isotopic composition of calcium sulfate, from uppermost meter sediments Gulf Aqaba (Northeast Red Sea) Iberian Margin (North Atlantic Ocean). In both locations, we observe strong correlations among calcium, magnesium, strontium, sulfate as well sulfur alkalinity, suggestive active changes in redox state pH that should lead to carbonate mineral precipitation dissolution. The isotope (δ 44 Ca) is, however, relatively invariant our measured profiles, suggesting is not occurring within boundary layer at these sites. explore several reasons why δ Ca might be changing studied despite other ions their composition, mixing between surface deep minerals below layer, possibility iron manganese cycling inhibits precipitation, may slow enough preclude fractionation during precipitation. Our results suggest dissolution particularly diffusive elicit a more complex response than previously thought.

Calcium Carbonate Dissolution Rate in Limestone Contactors

The project summarized here investigated some of the parameters and relationships used to predict the performance of limestone contactors. The purpose of the project was to study the effect of limestone composition, especially the dolomite [CaMg(CO 3) 2 ] and impurity content of the stone, on the kinetics of carbonate mineral dissolution and to determine the effect of temperature on the rate of...

Protein-Mediated Precipitation of Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate is an important component in exoskeletons of many organisms. The synthesis of calcium carbonate was performed by mixing dimethyl carbonate and an aqueous solution of calcium chloride dihydrate. The precipitation product was characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrar...

Strain-specific ureolytic microbial calcium carbonate precipitation.

During a study of ureolytic microbial calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)) precipitation by bacterial isolates collected from different environmental samples, morphological differences were observed in the large CaCO(3) crystal aggregates precipitated within bacterial colonies grown on agar. Based on these differences, 12 isolates were selected for further study. We hypothesized that the striking differ...

Fabrication of carbonate apatite block based on internal dissolution-precipitation reaction of dicalcium phosphate and calcium carbonate.

In this study, we investigated a novel method for fabrication of carbonate apatite block without ionic movement between precursor and solution by using precursor that includes all constituent ions of carbonate apatite. A powder mixture prepared from dicalcium phosphate anhydrous and calcite at appropriate Ca/P ratios (1.5, 1.67, and 1.8) was used as starting material. For preparation of specime...
